The programme involves a series of modules that develop competences, including disciplinary knowledge and expertise and professional skills and attitude.  The training further emphasizes a practical exposure through community outreach as a means to expose and link training, research and development with farmers in manner focused to increased productivity, value addition and marketing.

The Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship (BASE) is dedicated to produce graduates with professional skills to become all round agro-entrepreneurs in not only crop and animal husbandry but also with skills in value addition and management of agriculture as a business. The programme combines basic science with experiential learning in agricultural sciences.

This programme puts emphasis on training for the transformation of the agriculture sector to one driven by business and value-addition entrepreneurs and is therefore a response to market-driven needs in the Ugandan agricultural sector.

Integration of Open Distance E-Learning (ODeL) is a viable mechanism for instruction in response to the effects of the COVID- 19 pandemic.  It is also a flexible method of instruction, especially for those with demanding full-time jobs or who find it difficult to invest time and expense in travel.

For admission to the degree programme under direct entry scheme, a candidate must have sat for and passed:

  1. UCE or its equivalent (Emphasis subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and English)
  2. UACE or its equivalent with at least 2 principal passes in Biology and either Chemistry, Agriculture, Economics/ Entrepreneurship, Physics, or Geography
  • The two essential subjects recommended are Biology/ Agriculture and Chemistry
  1. The desired subjects recommended are Agriculture and Economics or Geography
  2. The relevant subjects recommended are Physics and Geography

 Mature Age Entry Scheme

For admission to the BASE degree programme under mature age entry scheme, a candidate must have sat and passed the examinations in the aptitude and Agriculture/ Entrepreneurship.

Diploma holders’ entry scheme

A diploma holder from a recognised institution in the areas of Agriculture, Animal Science, crop science and Environmental Sciences may be admitted to the BASE degree programme provided:

(i) one has attained at least a second-class Diploma

(ii) one took courses in relevant subjects at the tertiary institutions

Program Outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, a graduate with Bachelor of Agricultural Science and Entrepreneurship (BASE) should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in agricultural production systems and entrepreneurship as a tool to sustainable improvement of livelihoods, food and nutrition security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Display confidence in communicating agricultural information to stakeholders.
  • Identify and apply appropriate agricultural tools for the enhancement of national agricultural research, production and development under the domain of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) in Uganda.
  • Exhibit scientific skills to deal with management of crops and animals as well as the resources involved in their value chains
  • Retrieve and analyze research findings from the end-user scientific community.
  • Apply basic knowledge and skills in agricultural science and entrepreneurship, in product and service delivery.
  • Link agricultural sciences to other fields such as law, ethics, commerce and industry as related to national and global development goals.
  • Pursue a higher degree in more specialized areas of agriculture.
  • Exhibit professionalism, integrity and Christian ethics in the work environment
  • Demonstrate self-confidence and ability to adapt to new situations
