MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the Department of Natural Resource Economics & Agribusiness, Uganda Christian University and thanks for visiting our website. We are a research-intensive academic department that trains for the agri-food industry and undertakes applied policy research for the agricultural sector in Uganda and the Sub-Saharan region. The department is keen on maintaining strong linkages with stakeholders in the agrifood sector as well as development partners.

Our postgraduate training and research approaches have a strong    focus on agribusiness management, natural resource economics, agricultural policy and rural development.

Natural Resource Economics & Agribusiness

One of the three established departments in the faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the main Campus. We are located around the technology park area. The department is mandated to handle postgraduate programmes (MSc & PhD) and research projects.

Currently, the Department offers the following postgraduate Programmes;

  1. Master of Science in Agriculture with tracks in (1) Rural Development (2) Crop Science and (3) Soil Science 
  2. Master of Science in Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship
  3. Master of Science in Agricultural Economics
  4. PhD in Agricultural Systems and Value Chain Management

The Department is also in the process of mounting research projects:

  • Soil & Crop Improvement
  • Natural Resource Management & Agribusiness
  • Policy Analysis  

The MSc programs are structured for two years, while the PhD program is designed to be completed in three years. Each academic year comprises two semesters. The mode of delivery of these Postgraduate programs is purely blended online. 

Our postgraduate training emphasises the application of economic theory and ultra-modern empirical methods in the resolution of problems affecting today’s agricultural sector and attracts a rich blend of international students from the Sub-Saharan region.

Our MSc programs are reputable and as a result, our graduates easily find job placements in the agri-food industry and the PhD program attracts international students. Our PhD graduates are trained to become leaders in academia and in the research and development spheres.

The Department has a pool of diversified academic staff, of which two are at a level of Associate Professors with international awards in research, trained to the PhD level and a support staff team to ensure that the Department delivers its mandate. We continue to publish our cutting-edge research in reputable peer-reviewed journals and contribute to the agricultural policy discourse in Uganda, East African Community and beyond. We strive to attain international recognition in training competent professionals in research, agribusiness and managers in order to contribute to the national development agenda of transforming livelihoods for all through Agriculture.

To promote and improve the utilization of research findings, training programmes and collaborative networks among agricultural and applied economic specialists in shaping the growth of agricultural productivity for poverty reduction, secure livelihoods and natural resource management.
